Hopeful

Earlier today we did something that we never dreamed that we would do. But as some dreams don't come true, others are realized. This summer we spent much of our free time weighing the pros and cons of proceeding with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). Sometime in June we decided this was something we wholeheartedly wanted to pursue, together. We have been to all the necessary appointments, injected all the necessary drugs, undergone the many early morning ultrasounds and blood work, to arrive at this point today.

Today, we are able to show you a picture of what will hopefully be our next child, at only 5 days after fertilization. Today, this tiny embryo was transferred back where is should have been from the start, but couldn't be, due to our desire to prevent ANY more of our children from having SMA. The PGD provided us with the kind of peace of mind that we weren't sure we would ever have again. The assurance, that this child does NOT have SMA.

As far as we feel we both have come, we are only in the "infant" stages of this long journey. We have many more milestones to achieve before a sigh of relief may come, but hold on tightly to that possibility. Today is surreal, and full of hope. Our hearts are full and ready for this next chapter. In subtle ways, such as a song, a racehorse named "The Flying Pig", last words before being put to sleep for surgery, Ryan has shown us that he is here with us as we seek to fulfill a dream we didn't know we could dream.

It is with a very faithful heart that I ask for your prayers, once again. For this new life inside, for life lost, for the life our family may someday lead together.
